illume Duo (Marimba + Violin)
Formed in 2023 at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, the illume Duo, consisting of percussionist Matt Boyle and violinist Josephine Kim, brings a fresh and dynamic approach to chamber music. Their performances showcase a diverse repertoire that includes transcriptions and contemporary works by composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Paul Lansky, and Lyle Mays. They have captivated audiences with their innovative sound and artistry, performing at events such as the Peabody @ Goucher Concert Series and Peabody's graduation recital, as well as in masterclasses with renowned musicians Christoph Sietzen and Ji Su Jung.
Josephine Kim, a violinist known for her versatility and expressive playing, has an extensive performance background as both an orchestral and chamber musician. She has served as a section violin substitute with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, and Symphony in C Orchestra. A seasoned chamber musician, Josephine has been a semi-finalist in the Coltman Chamber Music Competition and an Artist in Residence at Arcadia University. Her commitment to music education is evident in her private teaching practice and her role as a mentor and tutor for young violinists. Josephine recently completed her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University under the guidance of Professor Vadim Gluzman
Matt Boyle, is a percussionist known for his dynamic and unique performances in a multitude of settings. His passion for contemporary and classical music is reflected in his diverse performance history, including his percussion duo, the BoyleBeebe Duo, his performances at YellowBarn and recording projects with audio engineer Ben Giroux. Boyle has performed with distinguished ensembles like the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. Matt's accolades include the Avedis Zildjian Percussion Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he was a member of various ensembles throughout the festival. Matt is pursuing a Master of Music in Percussion Performance at the Yale School of Music with Robert van Sice, following his Bachelor of Music from the Peabody Institute.
